Sony DMXWL1 BRAVIA Wireless HD Link Review
The Sony DMXWL1 BRAVIA Wireless HD Link is a branded and almost proprietary solution for Wireless HD from the company. It is supposed to be a plug and play solution for anything that outputs to HDMI and a compatible Bravia TV. That’s right, the greatest crippling factor for this wireless HD kit is that from the very beginning it is meant for Bravia TV sets only. But that says nothing it about how it performs.
The DMXWL1 is a Bravia branded product to begin with, so the very first glance will tell you that it will work with Bravia TV’s. Now this is a normal, two-piece transmitter plus receiver kit. So as usual you plug in the transmitter to your source and plug in the receiver to your TV, which in this should ideally be a Bravia. For more help on deciding on whether it will work with your TV, try the Sony website where they have a list of supported TV’s and nearly all of the recent ones work.
It has an impressive range of 65 feet and has no line of sight issues. Since HDMI ports are not bus powered, these too need an AC adapter to function. The receiver has 4 HDMI inputs with one stereo audio input and 1 component video input. There’s also 1 S/PDIF out for digital audio. It supports videos up to 1080i/60Hz.
Coming to performance — as long as you follow what Sony asks of you, which is use a Bravia TV, everything works great. The image quality is great and there is no lag. But if you try to get fancy with it and try to route it to something else, there will be glitches. Either the audio or the video will give you trouble. Good news for gamers is that not only is there no latency, it also works great with a PS3.
Thus the Sony DMXWL1 BRAVIA Wireless HD Link is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to anything other than a Bravia TV but for the recommended set up it works like a charm and has no set up worries. It is all plug and play. Only problem is that the price is bit on the higher side at over $220.
