WHDI Coming To Mobile Handsets

After Intel announced their intention to bring their WiDi technology to tablets, it is now Amimon’s turn to announce their entry in to the handheld market. And this they are doing by announcing their plans for making WHDI available in mobile handsets in the very near future.

Amimon is constantly updating the WHDI chip and the plans for integrating it with the WiFi radio chip is in full force. This has resulted in advancing towards a stage where WHDI can co-exist with WiFi on mobile phones and share the same MAC id as the WiFi point. This will also reduce component costs for OEM’s.

There are several interesting use cases for this, one of them being very fast mobile data presentation on a large screen. If you are game to carry around a WHDI receiver with your WHDI enabled phone, you can easily plug the receiver in to a TV or monitor and start showing images, videos and other kinds of data straight from the phone. Mobile gaming addicts will definitely find this interesting because they can now switch to a bigger screen whenever they want without having to worry about running in to technical issues.

One energy saving feature on the mobile WHDi is that whenever the screen is being streamed to an external display, the phone’s display will promptly go to sleep — this saving a lot of battery life in the process.

All of these good things are coming in the year 2012, so don’t start planning for it just yet. These things have habit of getting delayed well past their schedule. But then, they have only mentioned the year, so they have 12 months to play their dates around.

If this happens, WHDI’s stands the chance of making it really big and have good market penetration.
