WHDI Against The Rest: A Look The Technology

Early last month, we had a nice surprise come our way in the email. The Chairman & CEO of Amimon (the company behind WHDI) — Yoav Nissan Cohen —  dropped us a line to give us a thumbs up and forwarded some of his personally created material for the presentation he gave at the Nikkei Symposium this year. So this week, we are taking some time out to take a look at one of the most promising Wireless HD standards in the market — WHDI.

The main aim of WHDI is that it should be a standard that works with everything, everywhere. Somewhat like USB for wireless HD video that works from any part of the house, traveling through walls and not relying on line of sight. WHDI meets these requirements quite well thanks to its use of the 5GHz unlicensed band. This is where it has an upper hand over the 60GHz based systems, which suffer from interruptions due to physical barriers. It is simple physics really — longer wavelengths travel better. The 5GHz band also a needs less power to run, making the technology power efficient.

WHDI also wins out against WiDi when it comes to gaming thanks to the low latency ratings. It is one of the main reasons why WiCast (built by Asus using WHDI) wins over Intel’s WiDi. There’s too much lag in WiDi for it to be useful for gaming. While being fast, WHDI also preserves quality. It is one of the few standards in the market that supports 3D video at 1080p true HD resolutions. And according to Amimon, 2kx4k resolution is coming next year, making a lot of A/V enthusiasts sit up and take notice.

WHDI has also been enjoying arguably the widest support from manufacturers. Galaxy just brought out the first wireless HD enabled graphics card using WHDI and NVIDA GTX chips. TV manufacturers like LG are also using WHDI for their wireless HD ready TV’s. And there are others too.

So over all, WHDI is a position that can see them to the top of the heap really fast if they simply maintain this sort of diverse market coverage and maintain their current growth rate.
