AMIMON Introduces Compact WHDI Transmitter

In our previous post we wrote about new Galaxy GTX 460 video card supporting wireless HD via WHDI (Wireless HD technology). And today we got news from AMIMON about even better way to connect PC to HD television using wireless technology. It is called WHDI stick – a dongle inserted into HDMI port which is capable of transmitting uncompressed 5Gbps HD signal up to 30 meters and with less than millisecond latency.

It is hard to say how the actual production device will look like in its final form since it is only available as prototype (even in prototype form it already looks quite small and similar in size to USB flash drive). To receive the signal on the TV side you will need a receiver box which is similar in size to wireless router and could be placed behind the television.

One of the key competitors to AMIMON in this market is Intel with it’s WiDi (Wireless Display) technology which allows transmission of signal from laptop monitor to TV. This technology was announced at the beginning of 2010 and several laptop vendors already adopted it. On the other side AMIMON WHDI technology is adopted by ASUS in their laptops, by Galaxy Microsystems in their GTX 460 video card and by LG in their HD televisions. So it will be a question of who can get the fastest market adoption. One of the benefits of Intel solution is that it can be embedded right into chipset hardware and there is no need for end user to buy new hardware. But I guess since AMIMON was able to create an HDMI dongle they can easily create an internal plugin board with the same functionality. It is only matter of time and market demand.

AMIMON reported that new WHDI dongle product won’t be available until end of Q1 2011. We hope that they’ll get it out early to be ready for competition with WiDi.
