New Report On High Speed Wireless Connectivity Highlights High Definition Video As The Mainstay For Now
A freshly updated study called “Wireless Video Connectivity – A WTRS Q2 2010 Report” looks carefully at the newly emergent high speed wireless market. According to it, new wireless high definition video standards like WiDi, WiGig and WHDI — are the main application of high speed wireless connectivity as of now. Even though high speed wireless technologies have been developed with other applications in mind as well, high definition video seems to the most lucrative right now.
This focus on wireless HD video has become quite apparent over the past one year and multiple associations and groups have been battling it out for dominance over the market. Existing giant WiFi has teamed up with others to form the WiGig alliance. This being a team of market giants has pushed new entrants like WirelessHD and WHDI to vie for attention.
WHDI has responded by upgrading their standards to include WiFi support as well co-existence with other applications to gain viability in the market. The report interestingly puts WHDI as the leading standard in the market.
Kirsten West (PhD), principal analyst with the WTRS, has mentioned in the report that WHDI is the market’s dominant player at the moment. WHDI is optimized for wireless high definition video transfer and it is predicted to hold market dominance in the near future. WiGigi and WirelessHD on the other hand are seen as versatile protocols that will handle video as well as bulk data transfers between electronic devices.
However, as it has been seen before, the boundaries between these protocols will begin to blur as soon as there is a high level acceptance in the market. Once there is enough market penetration, chips with co-existing protocols will surely be developed and it is happening already with WHDI and WiGig. The report further looks into how high speed wireless applications will shape future markets.
