Intel Wireless Display Now Available On 25 Systems
Intel [NASDAQ:INTC] has stated that their Intel Wireless Display (IWD) technology is now available on 25 different systems. Most of these systems are running on the new Core i3 or Core i5 CPU’s and are available from multiple manufacturers. Intel has named Asustek (the company behind Asus computers), Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba as being the manufacturers using this technology in their products. Looking at that list, it is easy to see that 25 is a really small number, given the number of new models these companies bring to the market each year/ The adoption rate has been pretty slow and IWD is still slightly obscure in the wireless video market.
The chip-making giant initially put only Toshiba, Sony and Dell as the manufacturers using their IWD technology. So the adoption has clearly grown from that point. However, it is also clear that there is not a lot energy in the market surrounding this technology. Moreover, Intel is not giving out any information regarding how many Netgear Push-to-TV adapters are being sold.
The Netgear adapter is essential for anyone who wants to use IWD to stream video content to a TV. The push-to-tv adapter can be used with HDTV’s via HDMI in order to stream HD video from one’s IWD-enabled laptop or desktop computer. Computers Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200, Advanced-N +WiMax 6250 or Ultimate N 6300 can also transfer video to these devices — given that they have Intel’s My WiFi technology as well.
Intel has already advanced the IWD technology to version 1.2, which enables a person to surf the net on the laptop while streaming video to the TV. But despite these advances, with broadly compatible technologies like WHDI and WiGig on the market, IWD has a very slim chance of winning out at the end. As of now, its seems to fated to fizzle out in the long run.
