WHDI To Support 3D And 4K, Mobile Support On The Cards

The WHDI SIG (Special Interest Group) has declared that the specification will have support for 3D technology, thus allowing you to stream your favorite 3D flick on to your 3D enabled HDTV without cables. Also, given the the up and coming integration efforts to being WHDI to desktops and laptops, we might also see 3D gaming being channeled via WHDI. And there’s more coming.

Announcements have also been made about the WHDI standard supporting 4K resolution, which will give you images the size of 4kx2k — 4 time the resolution of 1080p HD and hence revered as the ultimate display at the moment. This will come as part of the WHDI 2.0 specifications, to be released in 2011 according to the current schedule.

The Full HD support on WHDI will include support for HDMI 1.4 3D modes and also for the 1080p 3D that beams a 60Hz image to each eye to create the illusions of 3D. And once the WHDI 2.0 specification is released, there will be more to talk about than just 4k images.

According to the WHDI SIG president Les Chard, the WHDI 2.0 specification will also have support for WiFi. It will be using the same radio for saving power and  easing the passage of the chip into mobile devices. This seems like a logical step for WHDI to compete with rivals WirelessHD and WiGig.

The WHDI 3D update is going to be released in the fourth quarter of this year and the WHDI 2.0 specification is due for the second quarter of 2011 as of now. Chard also claimed that the “top tier” of the PC OEM’s will have WHDI devices by the end of this year in the fourth quarter of 2010 and that embedded WHDI in netbooks and laptops will happen in the first quarter of 2011.
