Netgear Launched Wireless HD Home Theatre Kit At CeBit 2010, Germany

CeBit this year, like every year, is spilling over with new gear announcements. And amongst those announcements is an announcement from Netgear that has caught my attention. This is about their new Wireless HD Home Theatre Kit. They are boasting that it can play back “multiple jitter-free 1080p HD video and audio streams to every room in the house flawlessly, and at double the performance and range of solutions in the market today”.

This new Wireless HD Home Theatre kit is hence yet another wireless solution that streams HD media with negligible latency. But this one’s from a company that is known for it’s networking devices and it is a solution that claims to be able to push multiple streams of 1080p video without any lag or drop in quality. This makes the offering all the more interesting.

The set up is minimal, with the device being purely plug and play. There are two pieces. One needs to be connected to the existing router, which means means you will need an extra piece other than what comes in the box. The other piece needs to be connected to your home theatre system. So unless your home theatre system is a computer based one or has an ethernet out, it seems like you are out of luck. But then again, with the NVIDA ION and ION 2 based nettops playing smooth HD without hiccups, there really shouldn’t be a reason to worry about building an inexpensive HTPC.

Netgear is understandably focussing on mainstream entertainment options like gaming consoles and Blu-ray players. But they are also talking about internet TVs, which form a relatively new trend. The company is touting this has the first of its kind with optimal wireless-N performance in such a compact and affordable format. It works universally will all ethernet enabled CE device.
