$36.5M Funding Channeled to SiBEAM For Marketing WHDI Competitor

Whist WHDI is happily making in roads into the market as the future standard for the newly emerging Wireless HD media streaming solutions, there are several competitors in the market. One of them is WirelessHD and a company called SiBEAM recently got a funding of $36.5 million to market WirelessHD chipsets.

A Series D funding round SiBEAM received funding from Foundation Capital, who led the funding along with US Ventures Partners and New Enterprise Associates. Lux Capital and Hatteras Funds chipped in as new partners. Best Buy Inc. and Cisco both gave equity investments.

SiBEAM intends to use this money to bring its 60GHz WirelessHD chipesets. These chipsets offer multi-gigabit wireless media throughput along with zeros loss of quality. This claim can be taken as the truth because there is no compression or buffering during the transfer. This feature is also present in WHDI though. Lossless wireless HD media transfer over a short distance is what all the wireless HD media streaming technologies are all about.

With the technology for these components constantly changing, there’s an ever growing ceiling of how much data these consoles that put through. Now that SiBEAM is ready to put some serious muscles into its marketing efforts, battle for the wireless HD streaming standard is going to heat up real fast.

One thing that WHDI has on its side as an advantage is the fact that most of the major consumer electronic goods makers have left the other standards and have joined up with WHDI. A lot of companies, like LG, already have products that are on their way to the market that make use of WHDI.

In the end, the final verdict will be decided by what the manufacturers choose to adopt. For now, most of them favor WHDI.
